State of Design Festival 2009 'Sampling the Future' (VIC)
When: 15th July - 25th July 2009
In 2009, State of Design Festival will take place throughout metropolitan Melbourne, and regional centres around Victoria. More than 100,000 people are expected to experience one or more of the 75 events across the Festival's four main programs:
- Design Capital/ Business Seminar Series
- Design for Everyone/ Public & Cultural Program
- Design:Made:Trade/ Trade Program
- Premier's Design Awards/ Awards Program (next held in 2010)
This year's theme 'Sampling the Future' will address the dynamic tensions that accompany five major global conditions: climate change; diminishing fossil fuels; globalised economic crisis; generational change; and new technologies.
The 2009 State of Design Festival explores the intersections between and overlaps of these layered conditions. Programs and exhibitions will demonstrate how design and designers are empowered to play a very special role in this story. Not just in the way they might reflect the current social trends, but also as leaders of innovation in a practice that has the capacity both to change the world and Ð equally important Ð to change the way we think about the world. Most importantly, State of Design aims to anticipate where it is that design needs to lead us, and how is it that we intend to get there.
