Back to Bold - EMMA SHELDRAKE (QLD)
When: 13th November - 1st December 2009
Take figurative art, add pop art influences and a hint of understated eroticism, and you have the work of Emma Sheldrake, a talented painter on the rise. EM’s style draws on the flawlessness of fashion magazine photography and the depth of conspiracy behind “popularised” beauty.
The subjects strike a fine balance between Japanese anime characters and magazine cover girls, with defined, unblemished facial features. Symmetry is often blurred by EM’s signature drips, revealing an unbound representation of character, rich with personality and evocative imperfections.
Sharp brushstrokes depict finely shaped jawlines, eyebrows and lashes, and there is an intense focus on dark and hypnotic eyes, techniques used to explore the myth of beauty as perfection. Her work can be likened to popular culture sensibilities of Andy Warhol... See her one of a kind show.
BACK TO BOLD is EM’s 24th exhibition & 3rd solo show, which follows her Singapore group show “Australia” & Art Sydney this year.
The work as the title suggests, is back to her bold, gutsy, pop style and features portraits of local ‘Brissy’ people EM has asked to pose along the way.
